During World War II, over one million Ukrainian Jews were shot and buried in mass graves by members of the German police, the Wehrmacht, and the SS—often with the support of locals. The identification of these anonymous Jewish mass graves seeks to preserve the memory of the vibrant Jewish life in this region that was destroyed during the Holocaust.
Places of Remembrance
The project documents the history of once lively Jewish communities and transforms into dignified memorial sites the forgotten Holocaust mass graves in the west Ukrainian towns of Bakhiv, Kysylyn, Prokhid, Ostrozhets, and Rava-Ruska.
The Project in Photos
